Al Capone! I don't think there is a person anywhere that doesn't know that name. There were many gangsters running all over the country in the 1920s, '30s and '40s, but Al was right there on top. No doubt that Capone was the biggest and most famous of the mobsters of his day. He ran Chicago and in some ways, he owned Chicago. But a prison sentence for Tax evasion would bring him down. That's right! with all that he did in illegal gambling, booze running, prostitution and even murder, all they could get him on was income tax evasion. But it was enough to stop his reign as Chicago's top dog.

Capone was released early due to sifellis that he contracted from one of his own prostitutes' years before. The disease slowly ate his brain and by the end of Al's life he was nearly a vegetable. He actually died young. He was 48 years old.

There has been many, many photographs taken of Al during his lifetime. And we all know of a few of them. Photos that have been used over and over again to tell his story. But many more were snapped of Al with his wife, his mother, his father and his friends. There were a lot of them taken of Al in the courtroom and several mugshots from prison.

This blog highlights some of the rare photos taken of Al. Family photos and photos of Al in moment of relaxation. Al may have been many things...a pimp, a bootlegger, even a murderer. But he was also a husband and daddy. A family man just trying to support his family? Yeah, okay!
